Oral drug tests employ a swab of saliva taken from the test subject’s mouth as a sample to examine for the existence of drugs. Since they are easy to use and much more complicated to falsify than some other methods of drug testing such as urine analysis, oral drug tests are becoming extremely prevalent. This is particularly true for employers. schools, the armed forces and law enforcement. Reasons for testing can include pre-employment testing, on-going randomized testing, post-incident testing where drugs could be a factor, reasonable suspicion situations where conduct suggests a probable problem, and return-to-duty testing. Random testing is the generally efficient type of drug testing since a random test gives the test subject minimal time or opportunity to dodge the test process. Saliva based tests are ideal for random drug testing. They are quick, easy to administer, and not as invasive as other methods of testing that necessitate urine, blood or hair sampling. The results of oral drug tests are exceptionally close to those of drug tests performed with blood samples without the requirement for painful procedures. It is notably worthwhile in the discovery of very recent drug use (on the job for example) and in situations where you want to know what the degree of intoxication is (at the scene of a car accident for example). Detection Times for Saliva Based Drug Panels 1. Marijuana & Hashish: One to 24 hours 2. Cocaine & Crack: From the moment of ingestion to 72 hours 3. Opiates such as heroin: From ingestion to 72 hours 4. Methamphetamine and ecstasy: From ingestion to 96 hours 5. Benzodiazepines: From ingestion to 72 hours 6. Amphetamines: Immediately 7. Phencyclidine (PCP): Immediately Disadvantages of Saliva Based Drug Panels 1. Not all drugs are detected with saliva based testing. 2. Saliva drug tests are not accepted for use with the DOT Federal Mandated Drug Testing. 3. Bio-Hazard alert: as with every bodily fluids, heed ought to be taken to handle the saliva sample with care though saliva is not considered a bio-hazard except if it is tainted with blood. 4. Saliva based testing cannot reveal long-term drug testing. For this reason, many employers are starting to use other drug testing methods in addition to oral drug testing.

5 Panel Drug Tests

There are many kinds of at home drug tests. Which kind of sampling is needed and whether you need a 5 panel drug test can be determined simply and easily. Just follow the simple steps below to get started. First things first. What is a 5 panel test? The “test” part is pretty self explanatory. The word “panel” refers to the number of different drugs than can be tested with one home testing kit. While there are some single panel drug tests for substances such as caffeine or Rohypnol, most at home medication tests will screen for more than one kind of substance. You now need to ask yourself some questions to narrow the selection. 1. “What kind of chemicals do I want to test for?” Testing for all types of substances, including prescription medications, alcohol, nicotine and the ever widening selection of designer drugs is both time consuming and expensive. For parents and employers alike, the most worrisome are those that are illegal. As a parent, you might want to know if your child is drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes but you are probably more concerned with the use of illegal products such as marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, phencyclidine and opiates such as heroin. In fact, these drugs comprise the vast majority of illegal drug use in the country. Start with this kind of 5 panel drug test. You can always upgrade from there to other multi-panel home tests if you need to. 2. “What kind of sampling procedure can I use?” There are two basic types of at home drug tests that include a minimum 5 panel drug test. Some tests can be completed from start to finish in the privacy of your own home. These so-called instant drug tests use a sample of saliva or urine which give immediate results. Instant drug tests are great if you have the cooperation of the person you want to test, or can insist upon their active involvement. This is most often the case with employer mandatory substance abuse testing. However, parents may have a more difficult time convincing their teenager to submit to saliva or urine sampling. This is where you have another option. A hair sample test can be done with any hair sample that contains part of the follicle. The downside of the hair sample test is that the sample must be sent to an outside lab to complete the analysis so it can’t be considered an instant drug test. For this reason, it is also more expensive. But, on the positive side, hair sampling is considered the gold standard of this kind of screening because of its ability to reveal long term drug use. The instant 5 panel drug tests will show positive for only two to five days. To find out more about at home drug tests, and the 5 panel drug test that I recommend and which are available online, please visit my website by following the links below in the author’s resource box.

Two drugs are being pointed as contributing factors towards the mess that Tiger Woods now finds himself in — Ambien and Vicodin. As the Tiger Woods scandal snowballs, now may be a good time as any to talk about these two drugs and what they can do, in an effort to perhaps prevent the same situation from happening to other people.

Ambien. Ambien’s generic name is zolipidem, and is described as a sedative. Its legitimate use is as a drug that is prescribed to treat insomnia, at least for the short term. Insomnia sufferers who find it difficult to fall or stay asleep find comfort in the drug, which induces relaxation.

There are a number of side effects that an be associated with taking the drug, and one such side effect is having no memory of an activity that one recently engaged in. For instance, one can go as far as driving your car a certain distance but have no recollection whatsoever about having done so. It goes without saying that people who experience this kind of reaction should talk to their doctor so that the latter can explore other treatment options.

People who have taken Ambien have reported doing strange things, proof enough that this is one drug that should not be used outside of the context of a physician-monitored treatment plan. It is, however, being used unofficially as a sort of aphrodisiac, and evidence from the Tiger Woods scandal is the alleged statement issued by one of his mistresses regarding Ambien-assisted moments of intimacy.

Vicodin. Anyone who has ever been victimized by spammers will undoubtedly be familiar with this name. Vicodin is described as a specific brand of narcotic analgesic that contains hydrocodone and paracetamol. Its legitimate use is for relief from moderate to severe pain.

This particular drug, however, makes the rounds of illegitimate Internet-based drugstores – and one is more likely to think that purchases made from these stores are more often than not intended for recreational instead of medicinal purposes. This is largely due to the fact that Vicodin can induce euphoria; it is said that ten percent of high school seniors in America have abused the drug.

It is very difficult not to think about Ambien these days, and it’s not just because all the talks about Tiger Woods and his alleged mistresses are all over every sort of media imaginable. More “people of substance” other than Tiger Woods, politicians included, have been linked to the medication.

Although Ambien can be classified under the rather sweeping group of medications known as sleeping pills or “sedative hypnotics”, its purpose is more defined as a sleep-inducing drug that reduces the time that it will take for someone to fall asleep. This is in contrast with other medications that also induce and maintain sleep such as benzodiazepines which are anti-anxiety medications and barbiturates, which are more commonly used for anesthesia.

Among the noted side effects of drug such as Ambien are changes in appetite, diarrhea, dizziness, stomach pain or tenderness – and unusual dreams. These side effects, though generally considered benign, are nevertheless undesirable and need to be shared with your physician.

There are, however, more complex side effects of Ambien, and one such potentially harmful side effect is experiencing parasomnias. These are described as certain actions and behaviors that one cannot control; a perfect example will probably be sleepwalking. There have been occurrences of going as far as driving, eating, making phone calls – and yes, even engaging in intimate acts – while on Ambien. These incidents, however, are described as rare – that is, if one takes Ambien under the context of a medical treatment plan and not as a recreational drug.

Another key thing to remember about Ambien is that it does not mix well with alcohol – something that some reports say that Tiger Woods had been drinking on the day of his accident. Since Ambien is a sleeping pill, consuming alcohol and taking Ambien at the same time can be dangerous since it can increase the sedative effect of the pill.

It is certainly a frightening thought; fifteen-year-olds are ideally not supposed to lose their lives over such a thing as drinking too much. But in California, this is apparently a reality. A 15 year-old girl reportedly died after a sleepover in Gilroy.

Apart from the dangerous consequences that irresponsible alcohol consumption can bring – the most common and most deadly of which are fatal vehicular accidents that involve drunk drivers – young Americans should be made aware that alcohol itself can kill. Binge drinking – which is defined as consuming more than 5 drinks of alcohol within a two-hour period for men or more than 4 drinks in that time frame for women – can lead to a condition called alcohol poisoning.

Consumption of alcohol results in the depression of nerves that control such involuntary actions as breathing and the gag reflex, which prevents choking. Indiscriminate alcohol intake will eventually lead to the cessation of these functions altogether.

Debbie Allen’s daughter Shelby Lyn was 17 when she died after drinking with a couple of friends December of last year. She has since founded the Shelby Lyn Allen Alcohol Poisoning Education Foundation, and she goes about sharing her story and educating people about the dangers of alcohol poisoning.

Education will be very necessary – but extremely difficult. It is said that hard liquor has replaced beer as the drink that teenagers turn to. In reality, they should not be reaching for anything, beer or otherwise, just yet. Dissuading teenagers can be a rather gargantuan task, partly because anti-alcohol consumption advocate’s competition comes in the form of sophisticated television series that show snooty high school girls in frilly pajamas and tiaras sipping vodka martinis and munching on olives. Who can compete with that? It may actually take a lot of time and effort, but we actually can – and should.

A feature on the New York Times hails the advantage of using hair samples as opposed to urine samples during drug testing.

The title says it all: the hair cannot lie — at least as far as drug testing is concerned.

Since the 1980s, a drug test has been a standard part of the job application process, as well as the process of staying employed. More than just that, it has crept into many other standard practices not just in the United States but the rest of the world; there are countries that incorporate drug testing into several application processes, such as that of applying for a driver’s license.

According to the New York Times article, the practice of drug testing has reportedly led to a decline in the number of people who test positive for drug use over the years. But then again, that may be due to the fact that people can generally prepare for such tests. What that basically means is that a decline in positive results may not necessarily mean a decline in drug use among employees in general.

The usual method that is employed in testing for drug use is the submission of urine samples. Although this method has already led to the identification of drug use, the testing involved in urine specimens only have the ability to “detect a single instance of drug use in the prior one to three days”. This limitation of the procedure provides a window of opportunity for drug users to cheat the system by physically preparing themselves for a test; they can simply temporarily lay off the habit for a moment – just enough to be able to test negative – and then go on their old merry way, at least until the next wave of tests.

Hair samples, on the other hand, hold much more information. Hair testing can “detect a pattern of repetitive use over a period of up to 90 days”, which means a spur-of-the-moment resolution is out of the question and will not be able to yield favorable results.

Drug testing labs provide accurate results for drug tests in a short period of time. Oftentimes, companies require lab drug tests in order to maintain a safe and healthy work environment for their employees.

Why Are Drug Testing Labs Used?

A drug testing facility is used to detect the use of drugs in the workplace, the home and even in law enforcement. Many times, employers will require a testing lab test prior to hiring as a sort of screening. Also, parents may send a sample to a drug test facility in order to discover whether or not their teen is abusing drugs. Testing labs are available in many different forms including urine testing, saliva testing, sweat testing and hair testing. After a sample is collected from a donor, the sample is then sent to a testing facility and tested for traces of illicit substances.

How Accurate Are Drug Test Facilities?

Drug test facilities provide the most accurate of drug testing options on the market today. However, many on site testing products are equaling lab test quality, making for a more price conscious and convenient option for businesses and families who wish to utilize testing.

Pros and Cons of Home and Lab Drug Testing

Deciding between using a testing lab or a instant testing kit can be difficult. Many different factors should be weighed, including the level of required accuracy and reliability, the rate at which results are produced, sample collection and cost. A testing facility will typically cost much more than an instant testing kit, although its accuracy is often guaranteed. Regardless of the testing method used, once a sample is collected, it can be tested immediately with an on site drug test, whereas a test facility will require the sample to be sent to the lab-a process which could take up to a week or more.

All in all, on site testing is more effective for the average consumer to use. Businesses can save large amounts of money when buying home drug test kits through corporate bulk accounts and are still guaranteed a high level of accuracy.

Worried parents who fret over their teen’s potential abuse of drugs can use at home drug testing kits to find out whether or not they are using on the spot. Waiting for a drug testing lab to return results can be excruciating, especially when it is your child’s health and wellbeing at stake. While a testing facility may be the most accurate and reliable form of drug testing, home testing kits provide a reliable alternative that save consumers and businesses money, while protecting families and employees alike from the hazards of drug abuse

By Marshall Zelinger
m.zelinger@krdo.com
Follow me on Twitter at www.twitter.com/mzelinger

COLORADO SPRINGS – One of the toughest tests your kids could face this school year may not even take place in the classroom. An FDA approved home drug test is on the market and being advertised on radio. The “First Check” Home Drug Test tests for seven different illegal drugs (marijuana, cocaine, opiates, methamphetamine, ecstasy, amphetamines and PCP) and five prescription drugs (tricyclic antidepressants, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, methadone and oxycodone).

Essentially, you get a urine sample in a cup, put the test lid on and rest the cup on its side (which rests on legs). There are indicators on the lid for each drug. After five minutes, if a line appears within the indicator, the test is negative for that specific drug. If a line does not appear, the test result is positive. If you get a positive result, an envelope is provided so you can mail the sample to a “First Check” lab for a free follow-up test.

“I guess if I had a kid who’s had problem with drugs, I would probably resort to using something like this,” said parent Kitsen Goldberg. “It’s a parent’s right.”

Goldberg is the mother of three boys (ages 22, 19 and 15). She says she’s never suspected them of drug use, but would consider an at-home drug test.

“I guess I would try it. I wouldn’t totally trust it, but I would try it,” said Goldberg. “They’d be mad, but they’d get over it.”

On the side of the drug test box is a list of the drugs that can be detected, as well as street names for those drugs.

“I didn’t know that marijuana was called bud or hydro or zig zag. I’ve never heard cocaine called racehorse or yeyo or nachos. I didn’t know that amphetamines were black beauties or beanies, I think I’m pretty naïve when it comes to drugs,” said Goldberg. “See, your kids could be talking about things that they’re just doing everyday and you don’t even know what they’re talking about.”

“It’s kind of sad, and if this is what we have to do to step up as parents, then I’m for it,” said parent Jodi McConnell. “If you drop the ball somewhere along the line, then this is a great opportunity to figure it out.”

McConnell has two kids, a 12-year-old son and a 16-year-old daughter. Her daughter is high school junior and on the cheerleading squad.

“Her and I have actually discussed it and she thinks it’s a great idea to actually test teams,” said McConnell. “I think she’d be okay with it. I think she would want me to know and be reassured that she’s not.”

“I think it’s a great idea,” said Jason Daniluk, parent of a seven and 12-year-old. “You know, we all trust our children. We want to believe what they tell us is the truth, that they’re not (using drugs), but some cases they’re actually using.”

Even though the FDA approved the home drug test, an FDA report on the product suggests scrutinizing a positive or negative result.

Click here to see full FDA report.

From the FDA report:

Does a positive test mean that you found drugs of abuse?

No. Take no serious actions until you get the laboratory’s result. Remember that many factors may cause a false positive result in the home test.

Remember that a positive test for a prescription drug does not mean that a person is abusing the drug, because there is no way for the test to indicate acceptable levels compared to abusive levels of prescribed drugs.

If the test results are negative, can you be sure that the person you tested did not abuse drugs?

No. There are several factors that can make the test results negative even though the person is abusing drugs. First, you may have tested for the wrong drugs. Or, you may not have tested the urine when it contained drugs. It takes time for drugs to appear in the urine after a person takes them, and they do not stay in the urine indefinitely; you may have collected the urine too late or too soon. It is also possible that the chemicals in the test went bad because they were stored incorrectly or they passed their expiration date.

If you get a negative test result, but still suspect that someone is abusing drugs, you can test again at a later time. Talk to your doctor if you need more help deciding what steps to take next.

“Are (home drug tests) as reliable as going to a professional lab, a hospital or one of the private agencies downtown? No,” said Penrose Hospital Drug and Alcohol Counselor Jim Saunders.

Saunders suggests going to a professional lab for reasons beyond accuracy.

“There is less likelihood that the test can be contaminated and therefore produce a false positive,” said Saunders. “It takes the parent out of that adversarial role. If I force you to give me a ‘sample of your finest’ as it were and all of a sudden that comes back negative, now we have a trust issue going. It can really effect the entire relationship, sometimes for years to come.”

You also want to make sure you’re testing for the right drug at the right time. Just because you get a negative, doesn’t necessarily mean your suspicion is false.

“Marijuana is the one that stays in the system the longest, the others stay in the system just a matter of days, sometimes 24-to-36 hours,” said Saunders. “The window of opportunity, if you will, is very small.”

Here is a chart, provided by the FDA, indicating the amount of time a specific drug can be detected by a drug test.

Published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, it is hoped the report, involving two University of Glasgow experts, will inform guidelines on cholesterol testing in the UK.

Cholesterol tests are used as a key part of assessing a patient's risk of cardiovascular problems. Fasting has been recommended as it had been thought the body needed enough time to digest food in the system and to clear any fatty particles from the blood. This was in order to produce an accurate reading of so-called "bad" cholesterol – or low-density lipoprotein(LDL).

However, Naveed Sattar, Professor of Metabolic Medicine and Chris Packard, an Honorary Professor in Developmental Medicine, both of Glasgow, together with researchers from the University of Cambridge, found that test results were just as accurate without fasting.

"After analysing data from 300,000 patients, the results were just as accurate if the patient had eaten before the test," said Professor Sattar.

Lead researcher John Danesh, Professor of Epidemiology and Medicine at the University of Cambridge, continued: "For decades, people have been asked to fast overnight before their cholesterol tests. Our findings indicate that cholesterol measurements are at least as good – and probably somewhat better – when made without fasting."

The study also adds to the ongoing controversy over whether testing for blood proteins called apolipoproteins is a more reliable way of predicting heart risk than cholesterol testing.

"The studies showed that analysing "good" cholesterol – or high-density lipoprotein (HDL) in conjunction with LDL was just as informative as testing for apolipoproteins AI and B. Furthermore our paper shows that once "bad" cholesterol and "good" HDL-cholesterol are known, using the levels of triglycerides or fat in the blood, as a means to predict the risk of heart disease, is unhelpful," said Professor Sattar.

Professor Peter Weissberg, Medical Director of the British Heart Foundation, which funded the study, said: "Given the pressure the NHS is under, it is good news that doctors don't need to spend money on setting up more sophisticated tests based on apolipoproteins. But the study underlines the importance of all GPs being able to measure HDL cholesterol as well as totalcholesterol, in order to make the best predictions about heart disease risk."

Cardiovascular disease is the leading form of death in the UK and many other parts of the world.
